Zimmer, s, et al., Affiliated Hospital of University of Bonn, Germany, found that cyclodextrin can make atherosclerotic plaque smaller and make blood vessels unobstructed.            

Cyclodextrin (CD) is the general name of a series of cyclic oligosaccharides produced by amylose under the action of cyclodextrin glucosyltransferase produced by Bacillus.            

The researchers fed the apolipoprotein E knockout mice with cholesterol rich food for 8 weeks and cyclodextrin at the same time. The results showed that cyclodextrin could make the atherosclerotic plaque smaller and reduce the number of cholesterol crystals in the plaque.

Cyclodextrin can dissolve cholesterol crystals, increase the content of oxysterone and promote the anti-inflammatory effect of macrophages, which depends on liver X receptor (LXR).            

Gene expression analysis showed that cyclodextrin upregulated the expression of LXR target genes in mouse macrophages and human atherosclerotic plaques. Cyclodextrin did not reduce the size of atherosclerotic plaque in mice lacking LXR expression. In addition, the down-regulation of nirp3 and up-regulation of hsp90aa1 depend on LXR.
